Ruohua was born in Wuhan, China. She completed her B.Sc. at the University of Alberta with honors major in Chemistry, and Science Internship program at Gilead Alberta. During her undergraduate studies she worked on Rh-catalyzed Z-selective reduction of dienes in the labs of Prof. Rylan Lundgren.

Outside the lab, she likes reading books, yoga and music.
